Inheritance of seed colour in cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) walp]

Y. Mustapha

Abstract

A study of the inheritance pattern of seed coat colour in cowpea was carried out using varieties of contrasting seed coat colours as parents. Crosses were made in the screen house and segregating (F2) and non-segregating (parents and F1) populations were raised in the field. Data obtained were subjected to chi-square test to determine the goodness of fit to various genetic ratios. The findings of the investigation revealed that black seed coat colour is dominant to cream and brown while the brown and cream loci interact in a complementary manner.

Keywords: Cowpea, heritance, seed coat colour, dominant, complementary.
