Abstract

Local people’s conservation attitudes toward Yankari game reserve were analyzed using the ordered logit model. Since community based conservation is ‘people centered’ and experience with it is relatively new, it is important to know the views of local people regarding their perception of the reserve.
Overall, majority of respondents hold positive conservation attitudes towards the reserve despite their poor socio-economic conditions. The study suggests the need for more participatory approach in the management of the resources in the reserve with shift in focus from conservation to sustainable resource use through conservation education and community involvement and participation in resource management.

Keywords: biodiversity, conservation attitude, sustainable resource use, Yankari game reserve.
