Abstract

Studies were conducted to determine the mineral elements (K, Na, Mg, Ca, P, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn and Co) content in seed kernel, pulp and fruit pericarp of Detarium microcarpum growing in areas around Kwatarkwashi town, Zamfara State with the aid of Unicam 969 model atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The study showed the following results (mg/100g). In seed, the elements concentrations were K (812.50), Na (438.59), Mg (33.66), Ca (260.00), P (170.00), Fe (37.10), Zn (1.56), Cu (0.50), Mn (3.00) and Co (3.46). While in pulp and pericarp their respective concentrations are, K (593.75; 1,415.63), Na (438.50; 219.30), Mg (20.56; 13.63), Ca (160.00; 90.00), Fe (2.11; 3.41), Zn (0.34, ND), Cu (0.33; 0.16), Mn (2.40; 2.05) and Co (3.71; 3.56). Considering the reference daily intakes, the seed was found to be good source of Fe and Mn and moderate source of Na, while pulp and pericarp are moderate sources of K, Mn and Na.
