Incidence Of Systemic Mycoses In Patients With Suspected Tuberculosis In Kano, Nigeria.

N. T. Dabo, M. Yusha'u

Abstract

Incidence of systemic mycoses in patients with suspected tuberculosis, attending Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) and Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital (MMSH), Kano, between May 2003 and May 2004 was studied. Five hundred and seventy six subjects were involved. Microscopic techniques and cultural methods were employed in the laboratory investigation of the causative agents of the infections. Results obtained from the study showed that 65 subjects (11.29%) out of the 576 were positive for fungal fragments when sputum specimens were examined under the microscope and 61 (10.59%) were positive for fungal growth after culturing of the specimens. In both cases the etiologic agent encountered was Aspergillus fumigatus. The implication of the investigation reveals that some cases of tuberculosis may be compounded with mycosis caused by Aspergillus fumigatus.

Key words: Incidence, Systemic Mycoses, Tuberculosis.
